Once upon a time there were two electric motors. One day an auto engineer asked the motors if they would like to be part of an electric car or truck. The motors were very excited, as motors are prone to be.
The engineer said powering a car or truck was hard work and required the motors to run faster than ever before. The motors were puzzled and asked the engineer how they could go faster.

The engineer said he could use an electronic trick so when the motors tried to run faster, the magnets wouldn’t slow down the motors as much. The motors had heard about that electronic trick but also heard the trick required lots of energy. One of the motors then asked the engineer, “Isn’t there a better way that we can run faster?”
The engineer said he’d heard about a company called DuraTrac that shifted the motors mechanically. “You mean, pull us apart?” asked one of the motors. “Yes, pull you apart. It’s a much better approach,” said the engineer.
The electric motors were very excited and said, “We like the mechanical shifter. We can go faster and go farther than those other motors.” And that’s the story of how the mechanical shifter changed the electric-vehicle industry.
